You’re tired of feeling down all the time…

Maybe your friends and family have said something, or you’ve noticed that you just don’t feel like yourself anymore. Your therapist will issue you the PHQ9, the depression assessment, to determine your symptoms. The following is the criteria for Major Depressive Disorder as determined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5).

Major Depressive Disorder:

A. Five or more present for the same two-week period and at least one of the symptoms is either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure

  1. Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by subjective report or observation made by others

  2. Markedly diminished or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day

  3. Weight loss or weight gain, or increase or decrease in appetite

  4. Insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day

  5. Psychomotor agitation or the opposite, moving so slowly others have noticed

  6. Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day

  7. Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt

  8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate; indecisiveness

  9. Suicidal ideation

Or maybe you’re struggling with excessive anxiety and worry.

Your therapist will issue you the GAD-7, or anxiety assessment, to determine your symptoms. The following is the criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder as determined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5).

Generalized Anxiety Disorder:

A. Excessive anxiety and worry (apprehension expectation), occurring more days than not for at least six months

B. Difficulty controlling the worry

C. The anxiety and worry are associated with three (or more) of the following symptoms

  1. Restlessness or feelings of being keyed up or on edge

  2. Being easily fatigued

  3. Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank

  4. Irritability

  5. Muscle tension

  6. Sleep disturbances

D. The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

E. The disturbance is not due to substance use, a medication, or another medical condition.

F. The disturbance is not explained by another mental health disorder.
